Selected earth may be used as material for railway ballast for sidings and also for newly laid tracks.

Passing siding would get stone ballast but that track was rarely cleaned so the stone ballast soon was hard to distinguish from cinder ballast.

I have some warehouse sidings along with two others that serve food product companies.
For example if i was modelling the 50 60s and the mainline would be one type and the sidings another steep hills etc.

I made up a mix of other ballasts dirt etc to use around the warehouses and will add some weeds etc.
Ballast for concrete ties may be a bit larger 2 3 size.

Also i would glue the ballast with a flexible pva or white glue so it deadens the sound.
